Transformation of a 1950’s bungalow into a bright and functional family home in East Vancouver

About

Our Averra Developments team had the privilege of transforming this 1950s bungalow, located on a serene, tree-lined street in the heart of East Vancouver, into a modern, efficient, and welcoming single-family home. Situated in a well-established, charming community, our clients loved the convenience of their neighborhood, making the thought of moving elsewhere unimaginable. Instead, they chose Averra Developments to undertake a complete transformation, blending the “new into the old” to create their dream home from the ground up.

The project began with a complete gutting of the interior, starting from the basement up to the main floor. We removed the original roof and installed a steel frame into the main floor ceiling to support a newly constructed second floor and a brand-new roof. The exterior design perfectly complements its surroundings, featuring a combination of cedar shakes and stucco that blend harmoniously with the neighborhood’s traditional aesthetics while adding a modern touch.

Inside, the home was reimagined from the ground up to meet the family’s exact needs and lifestyle. Every room was carefully planned to eliminate bottlenecks and create seamless, functional spaces. As our happy homeowner proudly shares: “Everything is exactly where we want it, and there are no bottlenecks—we love it!”

The newly built custom home offers:

  • Four bedrooms
  • Four bathrooms
  • A spacious open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area
  • A dedicated workout room
  • Convenient bike storage
  • A music room for creativity and practice
  • A private office for work-from-home ease

The home’s attention to detail is reflected in every room, with special features that set it apart:

  • Fireclay tile kitchen backsplash that adds a pop of texture and color.
  • An oversized kitchen island (5’11” x 5’2″) that serves as the heart of the home for cooking and gathering.
  • Oak floors, custom finished in place, providing a timeless and elegant look.
  • A built-in desk constructed from a salvaged original house beam, adding a touch of history and sustainability.
  • Original George Nelson pendant bubble lights, iconic in design and perfect for bringing a mid-century modern vibe to the space.

Through thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship, this Cedar Cottage transformation beautifully combines functionality and charm, giving the family everything they need in a home that feels both brand new and deeply connected to its roots.
